Pyhä perhe Hammerfestin St. Mikaelin kirkossa
The Holy Family in the Church of St. Michael of Hammerfest

Vaikka luterilaisessa kirkkovuodessa ei ole erityisesti Joosefille omistettua pyhäpäivää, Jeesuken kasvattajaisä on tärkeä Raamatun henkilö. Joosef on jäänyt tahattomasti sivuosaan uskonpuhdistuksen synnyttämissä kirkoissa.

Sanoihan profeetta Jesaja: ”Iisain juurivesa kohoaa merkkiviirinä kansoille. Hänen luokseen pyrkivät kaikki kansat, hänen asuinsijaansa ympäröi kunnian hohde.” (Jes.11:10).

Profeetta Jeremia julisti vastaavasti: ”Tulee aika, sanoo Herra, jolloin Daavidin suvusta nousee Vanhurskas Verso.

Tällaisena miehenä Joosef on esikuva kaikille muille miehille.

Niille, jotka suostuvat Kaikkivaltiaan tahtoon, kirkastuu uskon kautta Jumalan sana: ”Herra antaa itse teille merkin: neitsyt tulee raskaaksi ja synnyttää pojan ja antaa hänelle nimen Immanuel.” (Jes.7:14). Se nimi tarkoittaa: Jumala on meidän kanssamme.

Joseph the educator of Jesus is a prominent person in The New Testament, although he hasn’t been given much space in the Lutheran church year. Martin Luther and the other fathers of reformation concentrated on the Word that became flesh, Jesus Christ.

Roman Catholic Christians on the other hand commemorate Saint Joseph as the protector of the Holy Church. His anniversary is on the 19th of March. The idea that Joseph protects the whole of Christianity is based on the fact that Joseph took into his custody Mary’s unborn child. The Holy Family was, so to say, the primeval Church.

The Gospel According to Mathew begins with a family line. It points out that Joseph was offspring of King David. This was a matter of significance to Jews as they knew that according to the Holy Scriptures the Messiah would rise from the house and lineage of David.

Wasn’t it Isaiah who stated: “And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, who shall stand as a banner to the people; for the Gentiles shall seek him, and his resting place shall be glorious.” (Isa.11:10).

And Jeremiah proclaimed accordingly: “Behold, the days are coming’, says the Lord, ‘that I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgement and righteousness in the earth.” (Jer.23:5).

When Joseph was told that his fiancé Mary was pregnant, he could not realize that this was the work of God and an establishment of God’s grace. Rather was Joseph in shock. Probably he asked himself how it was possible that a shy, modest and pious girl like Mary could have been unfaithful to him.

The Law of Moses was rigorous to women who had broken their engagement for marriage. The strongest punishment was stoning. An insulted spouse had the right to demand an atonement of that kind.

But Joseph was a man of good quality. He understood that no punishment or satisfaction would have brought back his lost dignity. Therefore he intended to put Mary away secretly. Maybe he even thought of leaving Nazareth permanently so that he’d not see Mary ever again.

While Joseph thought about these things, he stayed awake to late night. But finally he fell asleep. When he woke up in the morning, his mind had totally changed. He had seen a peculiar dream. An angel of the Lord had appeared to him and said: “Do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.”

This revelation persuaded Joseph to take Mary as his wife. In the eyes of the Jewish community it meant that Joseph admitted his fatherhood and took burden of a premarital relationship. But Joseph didn’t regret. He was now in the focus of God’s redemptive action, which gave his life a meaning greater than life itself.

God’s acts do not match with human pretensions. God doesn’t ask people permission to interfere with their businesses. In order to reveal his glory he demands us to open our ears and hearts, to examine ourselves, to change our minds and to give up our sinful lifestyle.

More than anything else we listen to our inside voice, which allows us what we will not allow to others and gives us rights that no institution has granted us. Because of this we hardly listen to criticism, which focuses on our behaviour. And it’s painful to us to hear and obey the word of God, which as an external voice reveals us the truth about ourselves.

From the beginning of Christianity Jesus’ mother Mary has received veneration for her sensitivity and allegiance. Yet, also Josef deserves to be honoured. He’s the man who can change his opinion and act righteously when doing so is undesirable and unprofitable. As a man of decency and kindness he’s a role model to all other men.

To those who accept God’s will, faith shall brighten this word: “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” (Isa.7:14). This name means God-With-Us.
