Matt.5:13−16

Ilman yhteyttä Jeesukseen he hukkaavat valonsa, vaikka he luulevat yhä valaisevansa.

Jokainen Jeesuksen seuraaja on kutsuttu todistamaan Herrastaan.

In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus talks about two qualities that his followers ought to have. He says: “You are the salt of the earth” and “You are the light of the world.”

What do these parables mean? It’s a well-known fact that salt can be used for purification, preservation and seasoning. And light makes seeing possible.

The emphasis of Jesus’ teaching is in the statement: “You are.”

He doesn’t say: “You represent the salt of the earth and the light of the world.” Nor does he say: “You are to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.” What he says sounds blunt: “You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.” This means exactly the same as: “The kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:21).

In the Gospel According to John Jesus describes himself: “I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12). Jesus says also: “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

The followers of Jesus can be the light of the world only with Jesus and throughout him. If they don’t abide in him, they lose their light. And they do not posses or reflect any light, though they may think they’re shining brightly.

There’s no record of Jesus having said: “I am the salt of the earth.” But it’s coherent to think that the saltiness of Christianity comes from him as well as the light that his followers may own.

This approach makes it possible to understand the statement: “If the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned?”

Table salt tastes always like salt. But poorly salted fish and meat are bound to be spoiled, if they are kept in room temperatures. If Christians have such a small amount of Jesus-salt in them that nobody recognizes them as followers of Jesus, then there’s nothing to differ them from those who'll be expelled to condemnation.

The parables of the city that is set on a hill and the lamp that is put on a lampstand bear the same lesson. There’s something terribly wrong if the city and the lamp do not stand out. If that doesn’t happen, the City of God has been camouflaged and the Lamp of God’s Word (see Psalm 119:105) has been concealed with a thick mask.

An average church visitor ‒ if there is such ‒ thinks that it’s sufficient that the priests do their job. But what Jesus says in the Sermon of the Mount is not confined only to priests and incumbents of the Church. Everyone who wants to be a follower of Jesus Christ is called to take the stand for the Lord.

Faith appears in acts. Virtues cannot emerge from disbelief. Therefore we need faith and allegiance to bear fruit. Us being the salt of the earth and the light of the world means that it’s essential to obey what Jesus taught, even though fidelity of this kind doesn’t please the world. When we are faithful to the Word of God, the Word does its job in us and through us.

In all his forgiveness our Lord does not accept an option that we love him with half of our heart. He wants to have the whole of our heart, both of our eyes and ears, our mouth and both of our arms and legs. When we dedicate these things to him, we can be sure that we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
